Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a common term used to describe hair removal with electrical current. This procedure came about after Dr. Charles Michel, a St. Louis ophthalmologist, devised a method of electrical current to cause a chemical reaction in the hair follicle to destroy germative cells. He devised this method for ingrown eyelashes. Today, these methods are called electrolysis, thermolysis or blend.

How It Works: A small filament wire is inserted into the hair follicle and heat is applied to destroy germative tissue that causes your hair to grow.

Permanency: Yes, the hair needs to be treated when actively growing with the proper amount of heat to ensure permanent removal. Your electrologist will set up a schedule for you to follow so that you can catch all your cycles of hair growth and achieve the fastest results.

Pain: There is some degree of discomfort, but most clients find that they can easily manage the discomfort for the duration of the treatment to achieve permanency.

What does it cost: The cost is based on the time the electrologist works on you.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a method to absorb the brown to black melanin in the bottom of the hair follicle to destroy the germitive cells so the hair can not re-grow.

How it works: The laser used can only absorb melanin in the tones from brown to black; it cannot see red, blonde or gray so that it will not see the melanin in your tissue around the hair follicle, only destroying the hair and not the skin. The beauty of being able to have laser hair removal is that it not only destroys the hair you can see on the top of the skin, it will destroy all the hair under the skin already developing so you do not have to come in for so many treatments in one area of the body.

Permanency: Yes, the hair cycles treated must be in the active stage for the heat from the laser to absorb the hair follicles. The hair follicle has to be brown or black. Laser hair removal does not work on red, blonde or white hairs. The U.S. FDA has granted clearance for lasers to advertise “permanent reduction” because the laser cannot see all hair colors or cannot treat all skin types. The type of laser beam used for hair removal with the most effectiveness is an alexandrite laser, diode laser or yag laser (the laser approved for darker or tanned skins).

What does it cost: Laser cost is based on the area being treated. It differs from area to area.
